April 22Earth DayApril 22 Earth Day Founded in 1970, Earth Day is a day of national environmental recognition.
April 30 Recycling Rate Report Solid Waste Planning Units in the Commonwealth are required to complete solid waste manage- ment plans per 9 VAC 20-130-10 et seq. Section 9 VAC 20-130-120 B & C of the Regulations re- quires that an annual minimum recycling rate be maintained. It also requires that the plan describe how this rate shall be met or exceeded and requires that the calculation methodology be included in the plan. Section 9 VAC 20-130-165 D establishes that every solid waste management planning unit shall submit to the VADEQ by April 30 of each year, the data and calculations required in 9 VAC 20-130-120 B & C for the preceding calendar year.
June 30Noncompetitive Grant Application Noncompetitive grants based on population and road miles, are available to Virginia localities through the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. These funds are generated by taxes enacted under Section 58.1-1700to 58.1-1710 of the Code of Virginia. A locality may submit an application for multiple localities, receive funding for all of those entities and perform work in all of those localities. June 30Noncompetitive Grant Performance & Accounting Reports At the conclusion of each grant year, the local government grant recipients must submit Perform- ance & Accounting Reports to DEQ on the activities and expenses for which the grant funds were used.

The awards pro- gram is an annual activity that recognizes and honors litter control, recycling, and beautification work across the Commonwealth of Virginia.
August Keep America Beautiful, Inc. Awards ProgramCheck with KAB for specfic due dates, application forms, and mailing address. KAB is a private, nonprofit organization with affiliate memberships across the U.S. There are 15 affiliates in Virginia. November 15 America Recycles DayThe goal of ARD is to promote recycling and the purchase of recycled-content products.
September/OctoberInternational Coastal Waterway CleanupThis cleanup is active in most states and 100 countries. This event educates the public in issues of freshwater and marine pollution, especially the preventable problem of litter.
