Litter Facts

KAB has conducted extensive research to determine that there are seven sources of litter:
Motorists (including boaters)
Pedestrians
Improperly containerized commercial refuse putouts (dumpsters)
Improperly containerized household refuse (such as bags not contained in trash cans)
Loading and unloading docks and areas
Uncovered vehicles
Construction and demolition sites

KAB definition of litter: misplaced solid waste.

Litter is carried by water, wind, traffic and animals until it stops and becomes trapped.

According to KAB, litterers share three norms:
They believe someone else will clean up after them.
They feel no sense of ownership for the property.
They litter where trash has already accumulated.

Solutions:
Long-term solutions should focus on prevention rather than pick-up. Cleanups are a part of our work, btu the long-term solution to change the behaviors that generate litter is through education and outreach.
